Mark Sullivan, Principal of Burlington High School, has been named the 2025 MSAA High School Principal of the Year, a testament to his dedication to students, staff, and Burlington community. Mark has spent 18 years at Burlington High School, leaving an indelible mark through his commitment to student success, innovative programming, and a school culture built on strong relationships.
Mark earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, followed by a Master of Education in Special Education and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Administration, both from Cambridge College. He is certified as a Superintendent, Principal, and Special Education Teacher in Massachusetts.
Before taking the helm as Principal in 2012, Mark served as Associate Principal at Burlington High School and previously as a Special Education Aide, Special Education Teacher, and Department Head at both Watertown High School and Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. His leadership philosophy is centered on high expectation and continuous growth, ensuring that both students and educators thrive.
At Burlington High School, Mark has led initiatives that promote meaningful learning and long-term student growth. He helped to introduce one of the nation’s first 1:1 technology programs, launched DESE-recognized Pathway Programs in Computer Science and Business, and supported the BHS Career Exploration Program. Under his leadership, the school expanded Dual Enrollment and AP offerings and strengthened student support through programs like the Academic Achievement Center, Bridge Program, and the Alternative Academy. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping a student-centered, forward-thinking school community aligned with the vision of developing well-rounded, future-ready graduates.
Beyond academics, Mark fosters a school culture that values recognition, engagement, and personal growth. His initiatives—such as BHS Wellness Days, Staff Appreciation Events, the BHS Inspiration Awards, and “Caught You Doing Something Good”—underscore his belief that a positive school climate is fundamental to success. Through these efforts, he has helped cultivate an environment where students and staff feel valued, motivated, and empowered to thrive.
Beyond the walls of Burlington High, Mark is a respected leader in education and athletics, serving as an active member of the MSAA and MIAA Board of Directors, where he helps shape the future of Massachusetts schools and athletic programs.
A 1994 graduate of Belmont High School, Mark returned to his roots in 2018. He resides there with his wife, Katherine, a dedicated Speech and Language Pathologist in the Cambridge Public Schools, and their two children who attend the Belmont Public Schools. The Sullivan household is completed by their spirited Portuguese Water Dog, Murphy.
Outside his professional life, Mark remains connected to his community. He serves on the Board of the Belmont Youth Basketball Association, coached and refereed as an IAABO-certified basketball official, and treasures time with his family. An avid runner and basketball enthusiast, he’s a familiar face in the Watertown Summer Basketball League and the Falmouth Road Race, where he’s crossed the finish line dozens of times while enjoying time in Falmouth.
