homeBASE: How to Develop a Homegrown Advisory

“Ugh, we have advisory?” How many times have you heard that uttered? Join us in combating that misconception by learning about our homeBASE program, and how to empower schools to create personalized advisories. Participants gain insights into crafting a vision, setting goals, designing purposeful staffing assignments, group sizes, and schedules. Equip yourself with the skills to create a successful advisory program that meets your school community's specific needs.

Participants will:

  • Understand how to create and implement a homegrown advisory program to meet the specific needs of their school community. This includes:
    • 1.    Establishing a vision with goals and purpose
    • 2.    Staffing assignments
    • 3.    Grouping (sizes and make-up)
    • 4.    Schedule (daily, monthly, and year-long)
    • 5.    Training and curriculum development (“Bullyproofing,” academic advising, SEL, and entertainment and fun)

About the Presenters

Advisory Teacher Leaders | homeBASE, Concord Middle School

Jen Coty, Reiko Funaki, and Tara Fernandez-Davila have over 20 years of individual teaching experience across various disciplines in grades 6-8. Together at Concord Middle School, they have spent the last six years developing a homegrown advisory program. Jen also currently serves as the English Department Chair while teaching 8th grade English; Reiko is an 8th grade math teacher and team leader; and Tara teaches 7th grade science and is the Science Department Chair.
