MSAA Cheerleading

The MSAA has released proposed alignments for the next two-year cycle (2025-26 and 2026-27)

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE PROPOSED ALIGNMENTS

The proposed alignments were generated via:

  • A baseline established using enrollment figures from the DESE database as of October 2023.
  • Enrollments for each member school are adjusted using the Competitive Equity Modifier, which includes two factors:
    • Stability Rate %: Measures how many students remain in a district or school throughout the school year.
    • High Needs Modifier: A sliding scale based on the state percentage for high schools.

The deadline to appeal divisional alignment is June 1, 2025.

  • The appeal process will be completed during June. First level appeals are approved or denied Cheerleading Committee. Denials may appeal to a subcommittee members.
  • Once all appeals are heard, final alignments for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 cycle will be published on August 1.

There is NO re-balancing of divisions after new appeals are awarded.

Music Copyright Laws

ATTENTION All Cheer and Dance Coaches and Administrators:

Recent enforcement efforts by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) have highlighted the need for compliance with US Copyright Law. The Massachusetts School Administrators' Association (MSAA) is providing the following information regarding the use of copyrighted music at school cheer and dance events (pep rallies, Homecoming events, cheer or dance routines in general, etc.) including competition routines.

The licenses purchased by the MSAA for the regional and state championships do not cover the music usage by individual schools. Each school is obligated to comply with copyright laws regarding the use of music. We understand that this change has come up at a time in the year when coaches may have already started the process of ordering, or have already ordered music. Coaches should contact his/her music provider to see what steps they take to ensure that they are in compliance.

The information provided here should not be construed as legal advice. If you have specific questions or concerns related to copyright laws, please contact an attorney.
